TODAY’S POLL
Do you usually make a grocery list before going to the store? |
LAST POLL RESULTS
35.6% of you voted It’s useful in some situations but overused. in yesterday’s poll: How do you feel about corporate jargon in workplace communication?
“I think a lot of people use it because they think it makes them sound smarter. Often, it’s just filler for what could be a much more concise sentence.”
“Totally overused. I feel like some folks think using ‘big’ words and corporate jargon makes them sound smarter and more important than their colleagues. To me, that makes them come across as superficial and less educated than they likely are. It makes the work atmosphere less friendly to work in, IMO.”
“Our leader’s new buzzword is SYNERGY, and I cringe every time I hear it.”
“If I hear about ‘upside’ one more time, I’m going to circle back and show you some downside.”
“IF I HEAR ‘LESSONS LEARNED’ ONE MORE TIME, I AM GOING TO SCREAM.”
“‘Work smarter, not harder.’ So cheese.”
“I often find that corporate jargon feels detached, sterile, and dehumanizing. Just say what you mean — there’s no need to hide behind the words.”
“It’s like word salad. Just say what you mean.”
“Legalese is confusing and ridiculous! Corporate speak — taking credit for others’ hard work and getting giant bonuses while the real workers need 2 jobs to make ends meet — is horrific.”
“Depends on the audience. I often roll my eyes at it, but when execs talk like that, you have to speak their lingo.”
“It helps when the corporation is Christian-based (like where I work: Dollar Tree).”
“People who use jargon often don’t understand what they’re saying because they borrowed it from someone else who also didn’t understand; they’re just free-riding on the experts’ cachet. When experts use words or phrases and sound cool, it’s because they put hundreds of hours into understanding the concept.”
“Since I am retired, corporate jargon in workplace communication does not affect me.”
“I don’t have any feelings about this anymore because I’m retired and I really don’t care anymore. 😉”
“Retired.”
