Call It Like It Is
Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question is something people definitely notice.

TODAY’S POLL
How do you usually take phone calls when you're in public? |
LAST POLL RESULTS
37% of you voted Not really — most places require a car or transit. in yesterday’s poll: Do you currently live in a walkable area where you can easily reach daily needs on foot?
“Unless you want to hang out with cows.”
“Even bikeable is hard — roads are not bike-friendly, and the bike path is in disrepair.”
“Have to take either a bus or a car!”
“I am in the Boonies! 7 miles to the nearest bus and a little market.”
“ABOUT 2 MILES OUT OF TOWN.”
“The closest store or restaurant of any kind is more than a mile away. There’s no entertainment whatsoever. The only neighborhood transit stops were closed down 2 years ago.”
“It certainly is walkable but not for any business purposes. Rural living is great!”
“I live out in the country on purpose. The lack of convenience is the trade-off for privacy and solitude.”
“I live in a small rural city, and most things are spread out enough that walking would be inconvenient for most things. There is a downtown core where residents there could dine, bank, etc. easily within, but would still have to travel 20 or more blocks for grocery shopping. Most medical facilities are far out of walking distance.”
“Unless you live in a condo and on the beach or in a big city, a car is needed almost everywhere in Florida.”
“Subdivision in St. Aug — at least a mile to Rt. 1, little or no sidewalks, and narrow roads with people doing 50+.”
“I must go to town before I can purchase anything. My area has modernized some — no more gravel roads. Now vehicles fly by; it’s awful.”
“I live in the mountains on a hill, so we have to use our car to get to most places. Lots of people walk on the streets, but with no sidewalks, it makes it challenging for everyone. Plus, we have to dodge elk and deer all the time!”
“I live in the mountains with no flat roads near me — no sidewalks, no street lights.”
“Not a store in sight… and I love it!”
“I have to drive to a lot of places to shop.”
“If I use Instacart and Uber, I’m ok.”
“I’m saying no, since the nearest anything is about a mile away, and I can’t walk that far due to my arthritis and neuropathy issues. I use a car when going out, and I’m able to have many things delivered, so I’m good — and also blessed!”
“For most people, it is walkable, but I can’t walk far now.”
“I can walk to a couple places, but most of my daily needs and work are a couple towns over, so I drive.”
“Unfortunately, I’m having issues with walking (chemo) and need to rely on my car most of the time.”
“I have a grocery store and a few restaurants and bars within walking distance, but I usually drive to work and most other places. It’s nice having essentials and things to do close by, while still having the flexibility of a car.”
“Necessities are within walking distance, but all favorites are not.”
“Walking is interesting exercise = things to see along the way.”
“I can literally walk to the train, stores, and have great access to two major highways I can hop on when needed — great location. I am slightly ashamed that I’d still drive many of these short distances. Now I’m walking more and seeing things in the neighborhood that I never noticed before.”
“Gotta love Chicago!”
“Chicago — great neighborhoods and public transit.”
“Feeling spoiled doesn’t really capture the delight of being able to walk almost everywhere for what I need…”
“I can literally find EVERYTHING I need for everyday life within 5 city blocks of my home — bank, post office, dry cleaners, liquor store, grocery stores, specialty shops, countless restaurants, barber shop, bakeries… the true joys of living in the greatest city in the country… NEW YORK CITY!”
“I’m an urbanite through and through. I would never live in the suburbs where they have to drive everywhere.”
“I love living near almost everything I need. The older I get, the less I tolerate traffic, and the area I live in is booming. I specifically sought this town out because of the convenience of things — I walk everywhere!”
