LAST POLL RESULTS

42.4% of you voted They usually give me enough time, but I’d like more. in yesterday’s poll: How do you feel about typical hotel check-in (3 p.m.) and check-out (11 a.m.) times?

“I don’t care about checkout. I’m up and out. I just wish check-in was earlier!”

“Check-out time is fine, and a later checkout is usually easy to get. But check-in should be available earlier if you arrive in town earlier!”

“Checkout usually isn’t an issue, but we’re often traveling internationally, and the arrival times don’t really work out. We’ve been lucky that when we call ahead and ask for an early check-in, we’re almost always kindly accommodated.”

“Hotels should allow early check-in if they have rooms available after 10 a.m.”

“But at the same time, they need time to clean and prepare the room for the next guest checking in. Cleaning a hotel room — especially if the previous guests were slobs — can be arduous.”

“You should be able to check in earlier than 3 p.m. It shouldn’t take four hours to clean most hotel rooms.”

“I feel like I’ve been cheated out of four hours of hotel time. On one of my regular trips, there’s only one flight in, and it arrives at 9 a.m., with an afternoon departure after 3 p.m. I have to wait until 3 p.m. to check in, and the next day I have to be out of my room by 11 a.m. It seems unfair to me, especially when the hotel charges for early check-in or a late departure.”

“Sometimes I want to check in earlier than 3 p.m. If we’re being billed for an entire day, we should have that option without having to pay an extra charge.”

“If traveling on a red-eye flight, getting to check into your room early is really helpful. I understand staffing can make it difficult to have rooms ready before 3 p.m. as a general practice, but there must be a way for staff to clean rooms as soon as guests check out early in the morning, before 11 a.m. I guess it would require looking at data on actual checkout and check-in times to see how well that might work as a system. Travel is brutal nowadays, especially when airplanes and airports are involved.”

“The check-in time seems to be more of an inconvenience if your plane arrives early. They seem to be less flexible because they have to clean the room. Honestly, getting an extended checkout can be a drag, too.”

“I really hate hotel check-in and checkout times. Sometimes there’s only one flight to a city, and if you arrive too early, you have to wait hours just to get to your room. And vice versa at checkout — if your flight is late, you’re left without a room for hours while you wait to leave.”

“If one is traveling by car, and the traffic is much lighter than usual, one arrives early. If the reserved hotel has a 3 or 4 p.m. check-in, I just keep going and get closer to my final destination. Late check-in costs them business.”

“I’m OK with it — it is what it is. But I usually like to sleep in, so I’d always take an extra hour or so for checkout. Check-in time is good, regardless.”

“You can always ask for a late checkout, and they’ll accommodate your request 90% of the time.”

“I’ve found that most hotels are flexible and try to accommodate you. If I have an unusual circumstance, I ask when booking my reservation if they can accommodate me. If not, I call another hotel.”

“As long as they can be a bit flexible, it’s not an issue.”

“Most hotels will allow you to check out later if necessary. Plus, there have been several times when our room was ready before 3 p.m., which is a nice bonus.”

“I almost always ask about early check-in and late checkout to see if they’re an option.”

“Too early to leave, and waiting until 3 p.m. to check in is too late!”

“Too early and not early enough.”

“PREFER NOON IN AND NOON OUT.”

“Check-in at 1 p.m., checkout at noon.”

“I’d prefer an earlier check-in time, around 12 p.m. I’m OK with the checkout time.”

“A 3 p.m. check-in is good. 4 p.m. can be a challenge at times. An 11 a.m. checkout is rarely an issue.”

“No problem.”

“I travel frequently for work and have never had an issue with check-in or checkout times.”
