LAST POLL RESULTS
30.1% of you voted I haven’t encountered this before in yesterday’s poll: If a job application requires a video submission, what are you most likely to do?
“And if I did, it would have to be a job I truly wanted.”
“It all depends… How badly do you want the job?”
“What is entailed?”
“Seems like that would be weird with the availability of meeting online…”
“I had a quick video interview prior to my onsite interview, but I found that beneficial. It allows both sides to determine whether or not to make the effort to proceed further in the interview process.”
“I would not apply to a job that required a video submission.”
“I’d reach out to the recruiter directly on the phone.”
“I’m old-school. I don’t use Zoom or Webex.”
“I don’t like the way I look on camera and expect my résumé to speak for itself.”
“I’d just skip the application altogether. We already have awful AI analyzing our resumes and rejecting us over one word or something similar. I don’t need to beat myself up knowing that AI is watching my discomfort in a video I make and determining that’s the way I am with clients in person or on Zoom. I never dealt with this until I was forced to resign from my last job and started trying to find another one. This was in the first half of 2024, and I can only imagine how prevalent it is now. Companies are losing out on great candidates with experience because of this and the discrimination that comes with it. I finally gave up that fall and classified myself as retired. It’s a shame our society has come to this.”
“It is an outrageous demand when the applicant is unlikely to hear anything at all about the progress of their application. It’s make-work of the worst sort.”
“I work in Human Resources and have never seen this requirement. From my perspective, I would reach out to the employer and find out if there’s an alternative way to apply. It seems like a lot of bias could occur, and for what reason do they need a video submission? Maybe if it’s an IT job, but otherwise that’s a red flag. Look for a different job!”
“Lame. No way. Either do it in person, or you’re telling me you’re unserious.”
“Videos are an invasion of privacy and can be altered to suit the needs of any party. An applicant is most easily read in person.”
“I’ve had to do these before. They are so incredibly awkward. It feels so forced and unnatural.”
“Are people doing that now? I’ve been at my current job for 5 years, so I haven’t been applying. That’s… interesting.”
“If the job is something I’m interested in, I would not hesitate. Of course, I’d make sure I look fabulous. I would rehearse like crazy, too, so I can give the best impression.”
“I’ve never had this happen, but if the job is interesting enough, I would take the time to make a video for it. I always welcome a challenge.”
“I have not yet encountered this, but if it’s a job I’m truly interested in, and the video is described as ‘required,’ why in the world wouldn’t I do it? What kind of self-important baby would you have to be to try to find a way out of it?”
“I’m past the age of applying for employment!”
