The Most Relatable Thing In Your Bag

Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — where we’re talking about a subtle form of self-care.

TODAY’S POLL

LAST POLL RESULTS

51.6% of you voted Reusable bags I bring myself in yesterday’s poll: At the supermarket checkout, which bag option do you usually choose?

“I live in Vancouver, BC. Plastic bags are not an option. I bring reusable bags with me or reusable totes.”

“Our stores do not give any other options.”

“Don’t have a choice in NJ.”

“In NY, you have to have your own bags.”

“We pay for bags here; people usually bring their own.”

“Hooray for California law — we bring our own! And there is a very noticeable difference in the amount of roadside waste blowing around.”

“I love my reusable bags. I keep some in my car at all times!”

“Reusable bags all the way!”

“So so happy to see that reusable bags are becoming more the norm!! 🛍”

“IF YOU DON’T USE REUSABLE BAGS, YOU ARE A MORON.”

“I either bring in my own bag or carry it out by hand. Quit putting plastic in the ocean!”

“Our state outlawed plastic bags some time ago, so I always bring my own reusable bags to avoid the 5-cent charge for paper. I can’t really figure out why they charge for paper when they never charged for plastic. Back before they had plastic bags, they never charged for paper bags — it was just the norm. You always got a paper bag to put your stuff in.”

“My idiotic municipality has banned disposable plastic bags in retail stores (although they’re still allowed for restaurants for takeout orders, and I use them for cleaning up after my dogs) and requires stores to charge $0.10 per paper bag, so I bring my reusable plastic bags that I started using during the COVID era.”

“In Chicago, the plastic bag tax just got raised to $0.15!”

“In Tennessee, it’s uncommon for people to bring their own bags. I’m proud to do it and hope people will change, but currently, I’m regarded as a weirdo. So weirdo I shall be!! I’ve seen maybe three people using cloth bags in my town. C’mon, America! Less plastic!!”

“I’m the bag lady!”

“I usually don’t go inside while shopping for groceries. Because of physical constraints, I mainly do curbside.”

“I generally always use my own bags when I go to Walmart. Wherever I go, I put my order in online, drive to the parking lot, park, drive home. I take my own bags, and I take my bags when I go to Dollar General — just about anywhere.”

“My challenge is remembering to put the bags back in the car after I unload groceries at home! (So sometimes I have to resort to the plastic bags at the store.)”

“Reusable bags! I keep them in my trunk so I never forget them. Trader Joe’s has a weekly bag raffle where you can win a gift card just for bringing your own reusable bags. Plastic is horrible for the environment. Why haven’t they made compostable bags the standard?”

“Would be beautiful if more places offered an incentive discount for using reusable bags!”

“I love this question. I get a mix depending on what I need and what I’m buying. Ice cream is a double plastic bag. I like to get a few paper bags because I use them to start my Weber grill. We reuse the plastic bags, too, for funky trash items we don’t want going straight into our kitchen trash can.”

“Actually, a mix of reusable bags and plastic bags (for meats and other possible leakage or spilling of items).”

“Plastic bags are the only ones offered.”

“You get a choice???????”

“Plastic is the only choice at Kroger.”

“I hate to say this, but the stores here really only have plastic, and I ALWAYS forget to bring reusable...”

“Unless I bring my own, there’s no other choice but plastic bags. The state of Texas claims to recycle plastic bags, but I have proof in my area that the bags from the recycling bins are brought to the dump and not the distant recycling center.”

“I use a reusable bag when necessary, but plastic otherwise. I then return all the plastic bags to the Publix recycling bin.”

“I choose plastic when I actually go to a grocery store, which is rare. I usually have them delivered nowadays due to health reasons. The bags I receive are reused for things such as pet waste, etc. I do not throw them away without being reused again. I do have a few reusable bags that I try to remember to take when I go out, though. Doesn’t always work, lol!”

“I need plastic bags for the cat litter box.”

“I just take the store’s plastic bags. I don’t request paper or anything else.”

“I reuse plastic bags.”

“I reuse both types of bags as much as I can but prefer the paper ones.”

“I prefer paper, but now most stores are only using plastic.”

“The paper bags are so useful, and one is usually sufficient.”

“Double paper bags. I never can seem to remember my reusable bags.”

“Mostly reusable bags, but paper on the days I don’t have reusable bags.”

“My community does not accept plastic bags for recycling. I use paper and recycle.”

“I have a pull-out kitchen cabinet bin designed to use standard paper bags for recycling. Then I take them, when full, to the big bin in the garage. Very convenient!”

“I use the paper bags as my garbage bags in the kitchen. Paying for a bag to just throw away is silly to me!”

“Thank goodness I don’t have to do the grocery shopping!”

“I live in Colorado, a state that banned the use of plastic bags at the start of 2025, so it’s either paper, cloth, or no bags at all! Having said that, I choose paper most of the time and also bring cloth bags with me — the ones I have already purchased, that is — and still have to pay 10 cents per paper bag!”
