The Strange Pull Of A Great Story

Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question is for anyone who loves a good story.

TODAY’S POLL

LAST POLL RESULTS

37% of you voted I walk quickly and like to keep moving. in yesterday’s poll: How would you describe your usual walking pace?

“I do everything fast. Up very early and at it!”

“Kind of like how I drive.”

“I use walking as a way of transportation, a way of exercise, and a way to release and use up energy and stress.”

“I like to get moving with a nice, brisk walk around my neighborhood. I try to walk at least a mile every day.”

“Pace is often predicated on how fast the dogs want to go. If they’re having a particularly big smell-fest day — after a rain or on a new route — we could be out for almost 45 minutes. If there aren’t so many smells, we’re done in 15 to 20 minutes.”

“Kinda depends on where I am. In the park? I’ll do a leisurely stroll. In NYC? We’re going 15mph and weaving through every open pocket on the street.”

“I don’t power walk, but I don’t dawdle either.”

“I like to take my time and take in all my surroundings that I don’t get to see while driving. Flowers, trees, bugs. It’s all so beautiful.”

“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed I’m slowing down when I walk. I try to walk for a longer period of time to make up for the fewer calories burned. Walking is the best therapy there is. And if you can get a companion to go with you, it’s even better.”

“Aging knees slow me down, but that’s not bad.”

“Until several compression fracture vertebrae, I moved at a fast pace. Now I have to walk slowly and with a measured pace. But I do get to where I want to go.”

“I used to walk at a regular pace, but that was before my severe arthritic lower back pain settled in permanently. Now I’m slow and take my time, especially since I have neuropathy in my feet. I’m tall with long legs, and people always expected me to be a fast walker. Surprise!”

“With 70 years of Type 1 Diabetes, the neuropathy makes walking a lot harder.”

“I used to walk very fast, but now I’m retired at 71, and I walk slowly.”

“As a young man, I was known for walking fast. I loved hiking. Now I am 74 with arthritis. I walk slow.”

“Since I have to use a cane, I’m slower than I used to be.”

“I alternate between average and quicker, depending on the energy I have in the moment.”

“How much time I have partly determines my speed. My puppy-walking speed is much slower than when this puppy grows some legs. The main things I focus on when walking are posture and observing (and appreciating) my surroundings.”

“I enjoy walking on trails in parks, but I also walk to keep in shape.”

“I used to walk super fast, but now not so much… though I can still go at a healthy clip when needed. I like to stop and smell the roses in my older age.”

“When I am alone, I like to amble along. However, I often leave the house late for appointments and walk briskly to make up the time.”

“If I am solo, it’s top speed almost all the time. With others, I go at their pace, especially if there’s a convo happening.”

“My (at the time future) husband was telling me how he loved to run FOR FUN when he was in the Marine Corps. I realized then that my philosophy was: Why get there fast when you can get there eventually?”

“The store is different than the art museum is different than with my elderly friend…”
