The Vibe Shift At The Threshold

Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question is about the story you tell yourself on the way out.

TODAY’S POLL

LAST POLL RESULTS

29.4% of you voted It depends on the item in yesterday’s poll: How do you usually handle “special” items (like fancy soap, clothes, or tableware)?

“I decide based on what the item is — some things look good out all year round, and some things just don’t.”

“I’ve started wearing ‘special’ clothes more often but save dishes and towels to make occasions more special.”

“Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s items (etc.) are used around their specific holidays.”

“For the most part, I’d say we save those items for special seasonal occasions. I must confess that some items end up being regifted.”

“If I’m not going to use it myself, I’m fine with regifting it.”

“I always save ‘special items’ for special occasions. For me, a special occasion offers a special showcase for something I really like or think is, well, special. Because I prize a particular object or item of clothing, I also want it to last longer, so I deliberately use it less often.”

“I try to save my ‘special’ items; for example, I have a dress that I only wore once at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house eons ago. Now? It’s safely stored away in a ‘hope chest.’ Plus, I usually have something going on during the week, so I try to wear something ‘special.’”

“I always save things for special occasions. Let me be a lesson to all of you: USE IT. We had a house fire 2 weeks ago, and it’s a total loss. All of those things I never used/saved? Gone.”

“I just use them now. Since I’m older, there’s no sense in saving them for future use. I could be gone tomorrow or 20 years from now — who knows? Might as well get my use out of them!”

“My wedding china sat in storage for decades, and I finally took it to our mountain house to use more often. I’m also giving a lot of the old wedding crystal to my grown girls. It feels silly to get them all for a wedding (which they generally don’t anymore) and then not use them.”

“I’m getting old so the time to enjoy is now!”

“Life is too short! Use the nice stuff — you’re worth it!”

“Continuing to learn to spoil myself…”

“Well, it actually depends on the item and the situation. 😉”

“I don’t know if I have any ‘special’ items!”

“I wear my special, sexy underwear anytime for myself these days, but I save my special candles and silverware for the holidays.”

“Not only do I not usually think about it, I never think about it, as I don’t have any ‘special’ items like this.”

“I make fancy soaps. When gifting them, I realized people were saving them. It upset me a bit, so now I also make less fancy ones to give along with them — that way, all my hard work doesn’t go unused but still gets appreciated.”

“I’m a broke 30-something, so I enjoy what I have. My most ‘special’ item is a pair of $800 Jimmy Choo shoes that I absolutely adore and wear for special occasions. Clothes, shoes, and personal items are meant to be used and enjoyed — you can’t take them with you!”

“I use whatever suits my fancy. At my age, I do not need to save for special occasions. Every day is special.”
