This One Has Teeth
Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question is more revealing than it has any right to be.

TODAY’S POLL
How often do you replace your toothbrush? |
LAST POLL RESULTS
39.5% of you voted Ask them to repeat it in yesterday’s poll: What are you most likely to do if you forget someone’s name right after they introduce themselves?
“And then say it aloud. Thrice!”
“Ask them to repeat it while joking about having a ‘senior moment.’ If the situation is right, I’ll say, ‘Senior moment — not to be confused with short-term memory loss.’ But only certain people get the last part of the joke.”
“I just politely tell them I forgot their name.”
“Well, you caught me! It happens all the time now. My short- and long-term memories are shot. I’ll say, ‘I’m sorry, what’s your name again?’ But only once. After that, I panic trying to remember until I either do… or give up. Getting old sucks!”
“I would rather ask a person to repeat their name than worry until someone else has to tell me what the name is.”
“I’d rather apologize and ask them to repeat it, then really drum it in, so I don’t have to ask again.”
“I never remember names, so I just ask again. I also let people know I’m not good at remembering names. Be upfront and honest.”
“It seems much more respectful to admit you’re bad with names and ask for it again, as opposed to using the wrong name or no name altogether. We’re all human.”
“There are a lot of us who are bad with names. My embarrassing truth is that I won’t remember your name, but if you have a dog, I’ll remember theirs. I was a vet tech and a groomer, so I guess it comes with the job. So… ‘Hi, Fido’s mom!’”
“This is one of my worst attributes, and as I age, and my hearing gets worse, remembering names gets even more difficult.”
“I am SO bad at remembering names. It’s almost as if I ‘tune out’ that information the moment it’s presented.”
“I’ll panic, but if I act quickly enough, I feel like I can save face by telling them I’m horrible with names and asking them to please remind me what their name was. (Doesn’t mean I’ll remember it, but it’s more likely. LOL.)”
“There is no shame in asking someone to repeat their name!”
“As long as I can muster up the courage, I’ll ask them to say their name again, especially if it’s someone I feel like I should know, or someone I’m pretty sure I’ll see again.”
“If not too much time has passed, I’ll ask them to repeat it. If we’ve met a few times, and I still don’t remember, I’ll introduce them to someone else.”
“NEVER ASK THEM TO REPEAT IT BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE IT DIDN’T MEAN MUCH TO YOU.”
“It’s actually a combination of all of these! LOL. But I usually fall back on asking them to repeat it. Then I wonder why I put myself under so much stress.”
“Love this question because I’m definitely going to use some of the choices above as my name-forgetting strategy. To be honest, I basically panic internally and then just pray I hear their name again.”
“It kinda goes like this: panic and avoid having to use their name while trying to remember it but still hoping somebody says it. When all else fails, I resort to faking my immediate and sudden death.”
“One should never reveal their secrets.”
“Run for the hills!”
“What a silly thing to poll.”
