This One’s About More Than Geography
Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question is all roads leading home.

TODAY’S POLL
Which type of area do you currently live in? |
LAST POLL RESULTS
38.4% of you voted I still like new music but mostly listen to older favorites in yesterday’s poll: How has your interest in discovering new music changed over time?
“I only really like new music that hearkens back to older music, though.”
“Nothing compares to the ’60s and ’70s!”
“Mainly listen to ’70s and ’80s music, with a little ’60s mixed in.”
“I’m still stuck in the ’80s and am glad ‘MY MUSIC’ is still widely accessible these days.”
“As a son of the ’80s, new music has to be really amazing. I love exploring new artists, and some have been a very nice surprise, but nothing beats the ’80s!”
“I’m nostalgic and truly wish I could go back to the ’70s and ’80s. A lot of new music just sounds the same to me, and there seems to be little diversification. Country music is too pop-sounding, and pop music is just blah, imo. But I do try to keep an open mind, many times ending up disappointed. Rock music from the ’50s through the ’90s is what I personally like, along with dance music from the ’80s. I guess I’m biased when it comes to my listening tastes, lol! I do love some Bruno Mars, though — his sound is nostalgic of the ’80s to me. 😁”
“I have kids, so I hear new stuff pretty often. However, my standard playlists are mostly older music.”
“Every so often, I’ll hear a new tune and really love it. It’s less frequent now, though. I think it’s because I have so many great songs on my phone that I don’t listen to the radio as much.”
“My main source of music is TV variety and reality shows. I rarely have a chance to listen to the radio, so, in a sense, my music choices are limited.”
“I don’t listen to pop or rock stations at all anymore. I was raised around jazz, and that’s what I enjoy most now. So, when I say my ‘older’ favorites, I’m talking Coltrane, Davis, etc.”
“I have Spotify and usually listen to the ‘Radio’ playlists based on my favorite artists, which play similar songs and artists. Every now and then, I come across a new song I really like and end up checking out the artist if I’m not familiar with their music. Most of the time, though, I skip around until I land on my comfort songs.”
“I haven’t listened to ‘new’ music since Adele.”
“Mostly, [new music] just sucks.”
“Cacophony.”
“I’m old, and I like oldies, of course!”
“ALL MY FAVORITE MUSIC IS NOW CONSIDERED OLDIES, LOL.”
“I only listen to ‘new’ music if it’s a new release from an ‘older’ band I’ve been following for years. I can’t tell you who’s who nowadays, and I’m fine with that.”
“New music by old musicians (Paul, Ringo, the Stones) will get me to stray from my oldies-but-goodies playlists. Dean Martin, the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, James Brown, James Taylor, Bach, Louis Armstrong, Ella, and Sarah Vaughan are just what I need to break me out of the angst of our current news cycle.”
“1969 baby. Best music ever!”
“Give me disco ALL DAY!”
“I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s with some of the greatest musicians of all time. Nothing today comes even close.”
“The new country singers all sound like screech owls competing to see who can screech or scream the loudest. I prefer old country and old rock.”
“I teach high school, and most of my students don’t even like new music.”
“I love discovering music that came out when I was in high school. I’m 40.”
“Finding new music in college was so easy. Now you really have to put in the time, but I love it.”
“Loving the new BTS album!”
“Love music. Always puts me in a good mood.”
“‘New’ music for me can also mean music I’m hearing for the first time. So, I’ve found some older albums and artists that pop up in various playlists that are new to me but considered ‘oldies.’ But overall, yes, I’m a big music fan.”
“Spotify has been great at really homing in on my taste in music, but now that my taste has gotten pretty specific, it’s been harder and harder to find new music. And to be honest, Spotify’s algorithm isn’t the best. The radio is still the best way to discover new music.”
“I love to think I listen to music, but realistically, I don’t. I have my regular self-improvement podcasts and my Audible books (way too many TBRs!). Smooth jazz and cool vocals are my background relaxing music. 😎”
