“Unfortunately, I probably swear too often. Curse words seem to be ubiquitous in our language nowadays. I’m trying to become more conscious about it and speak more properly. In some company, one must be really careful how one speaks. Some people are really offended and find it unbecoming.”

“My mother caught me swearing one time. Her only response to me was, ‘People of low intelligence use swear words because they are not smart enough to come up with better words.’ Without ever raising her voice, getting mad, or punishing me, she dealt a harsher blow than any of those. To this day, I do my best to come up with something other than a swear word for things. I also worked with the public for years and had to be very wise with the words I used. It shocks me to hear the language being used by kids these days! I worked in a school for a year and heard horrible things being said to each other. Then the parent would talk to me, and I knew where it came from!”

“A conversation I had with a work colleague a long time ago: If you don’t ‘need to’ use curse words and have good working alternatives (his father was a minister, so he objected), why would you ever use them? Cursing, except in unusually intense circumstances, shows a lack of respect as well as a lack of imagination/vocabulary.”

“There is rarely a need to use curse words if you have an adequate vocabulary.”

“I use curse words very rarely. I never use them in business or outside my home or close circle. When I do, it is to underscore a point or wake up someone who just isn’t listening. We have lots and lots of good words to use. Why resort to using curse words on a regular basis? It’s rude and too coarse for me most of the time.”

“Only when I’m driving and there’s an idiot on the road 🤣. I don’t swear in general, and even though I’m 57, it still shocks me when I hear someone swear. None of my 4 adult children have ever sworn in front of me either.”

“I refrain from saying them in public — usually only to myself when I make a dumb mistake.”

“I may use exclamations, but never curse words. There is always a better way to convey feelings than using gutter language. ‘Great Gobs of Missouri Gumbo!’ will be adequate!”
