Your Presence Is The Present

Welcome back to Poll Of The Day — today’s question asks whether getting there is the gift.

TODAY’S POLL

LAST POLL RESULTS

41% of you voted It’s mildly annoying. in yesterday’s poll: How do you feel when someone misspells your name?

“For a name with only 4 letters, it’s shocking how often it happens, though…”

“I have lived with being a Dawn and not a Don for so long that I just expect a lot of people are going to misspell it.”

“With a name like Kollette, I’m used to it. That doesn’t mean I don’t mind — it just means I’m used to it.”

“When I was a kid, my mom would spell out our last name with words: ‘N as in Nancy, S as in Sam,’ because it was difficult for some people to figure out the spelling of the name from just the pronunciation. Now, I’m in my fifties, and I still use that same ‘spell with words’ method with my last name whenever I need to use it.”

“My name has been misspelled for as long as I can remember. I’m over 60, so it’s been a LOOOOONG time. However, kids have it even worse now, with so many names and unique spellings. It won’t ever be Jeff, Steve, and Bob anymore.”

“It’s an old-fashioned name. It’s in the Bible, so it’s not hard. It’s not spelled some newfangled way.”

“I have a common name, but many people think it’s something else when I say it. Sometimes they still don’t understand, even when I spell it. It’s annoying, but it doesn’t particularly anger me.”

“When someone misspells my name, it usually leads to mispronouncing it. The second and last letter in my name is an ‘a,’ but people often spell it with an ‘e.’ Then they pronounce it with a masculine ‘e’ sound rather than the feminine ‘ahh.’”

“I am more perturbed when they mispronounce my name.”

“When I give someone my name, I spell it out. They usually write it down differently. Then, when they need to address me, they use the name they wrote down. It’s mildly annoying. Just listen to what I’m saying.”

“It’s extremely annoying, especially when I’ve already spelled my name or told you how to spell it.”

“I really don’t mind if they try to spell my last name phonetically. I usually go straight into spelling it to keep it easy. If they still write it out wrong, then that’s very annoying.”

“Mine is always misspelled. Annoying, to say the least.”

“It’s mildly annoying, but more so if my name is literally in my email address or I signed off with it. That being said, I find it HIGHLY annoying when someone you’ve known for 25+ years can’t be bothered to spell your child’s (basic) name correctly after 18 years. You know, just as an example. Haha!”

“It’s just lazy and shows a lack of care. You can’t get an email from my work account without seeing my name spelled correctly 3 times, yet people still manage to misspell it.”

“My friend got a plaque for her 30th work anniversary, and they spelled her last name wrong. D’oh!”

“My name is at the bottom of my email, so if you can’t get it right when responding, that’s just pure laziness.”

“At a coffee shop, I don’t care. In an email, where you can see my name multiple times... you need to get it together.”

“If someone doesn’t speak the language, I get it. And usually, those are the ones who are educated enough to ask first.”

“Sometimes, if it’s a name that’s unfamiliar to you — for example, from a different language — it happens to everyone.”

“I have a capital letter in the middle of my last name, but most Americans with the same name, even some of my relatives, don’t use the capital letter. If someone I’ve known for a long time doesn’t use the capital, that is so disrespectful to me.”

“Mostly disrespectful if the error has been pointed out to them before.”

“Misspelling my name is an easy mistake to make, but once the error is pointed out, it helps to get it right.”

“None can spell it without instruction. I have a weird last name.”

“It happens so frequently I can’t be bothered by it. That’s what happens when your name isn’t popular or has a bunch of variations. Whatever — it’s close enough!”

“I have grown up with an uncommon spelling of a common name. I used to correct it, but it no longer bothers me — it’s expected.”

“I’m used to it. At first it bugged me, but I don’t care anymore.”

“Who cares!”

“Although my name is fairly easy to spell and does not frequently have alternative spellings, I can understand how someone may never have seen the name in writing, or even if they have, may not have thought to remember its spelling. Some people simply aren’t very good at spelling. I don’t believe anyone intentionally misspells others’ names (unless in jest), so I just chalk it up to a spelling error based on a lack of knowledge or simply an oops. As long as they don’t spell it ‘Late for dinner,’ I take no offense. :)”

“Just don’t call me ‘Late for dinner.’”

“It kinda just makes me laugh? It’s not that serious.”

“There are so many other things that are more important than misspelling a name or, in my case, mispronouncing it. People should not be annoyed by this at all.”

“No biggie. First names have multiple spellings these days. My last name, both maiden and married, is difficult. I just correct them, if needed, and go on with my life. There are too many other important things to worry about now. 😉”

“There are many different spellings of many names!! Most people don’t understand that until they get older!”
